For our digital artifact, myself, Shannon, Giorgia, Catherine and Níamh all worked on an educational video on surveillance capitalism.
Why?
Amongst an array of really compelling options, it was difficult to decide what to do. Early on, I found myself simultaneously intrigued and disturbed by the intricacies of online data harvesting. So in our first formal group meeting, I suggested it as an idea, and it went down well enough with the rest of the group for us to pursue it.
How?
Brainstorming, we considered all of the possible angles we could approach the topic from, evaluating ideas like a wordpress post to someone’s website, or a simple presentation. We realized there was great potential in the medium of the video, that we could approach the topic through the lens of a relatable “day-in-the-life” style animation sequence. We knew it would be a lot of work, and were excited to take on the challenge of making the final product. When it came to the delegation of tasks, Catherine and Giorgia wanted to work on the animation side, Níamh was dealt the presentation and Shannon and I worked together on the research, scripts and storyboard across both the video and associated presentation. Shannon and I corresponded over messages online and worked together out of a Google Docs file, adding our individual contributions and combining our ideas. When our script was serviceable, we sent it over to the others for them to work off of. As a final touch, every member worked together on the video’s voiceover, with the task divided equally into 5 parts.
And?
We were very, very happy with the way it turned out. The reading and writing paid off immensely, and the girls’ animation came together tremendously well, hitting every target we’d set and surpassing all expectations of ourselves.
